Why Sewage Damage Cleanup Is Urgent After A Flood

By: Samson Paulotti

Whether you are dealing with a flood that has affected only your home, or your entire area has been massively flooded by a hurricane or other natural disaster, it is important that sewage damage cleanup begin immediately. A sewage backup into your home through a toilet, sink, or into a basement floor is just as contaminated as flood waters which also carry dangerous chemicals and human feces.

It is not only important that you start sewage damage cleanup immediately, but that you do it correctly so that you do not leave your home and even your health vulnerable to future problems. Here are a few problems to look out for, whether you attempt sewage damage cleanup on your own or hire a reputable company to do the work.

Waterborne Diseases

Anytime you are dealing with sewage water there are parasites, bacteria, and other things present which could lead to diseases in the human body. The elderly, children, and pets are particularly susceptible to these things so it is important that you not expose them to the flooded area. If an entire home has been flooded with sewage then it's a good idea to find somewhere else to stay until sewage damage cleanup has been appropriately completed.

You do not want to wade through sewage water or allow it to contact your hands, face, or other body parts. Any point at which germs, bacteria, and parasites could enter your body should be protected at all costs. If you must enter a home before the sewage damage cleanup has been completed make sure to wear gloves and avoid touching your face.

It is highly recommended that sewage damage cleanup only be handled by a professional since there is such a great risk to your health and life.

Infected wounds

If you have any open cuts, scrapes or bodily wounds you should not go anywhere near sewage floods of any sort. It is very easy for the bacteria and parasites to enter an open wound and create very serious infections. Protect anyone with injuries by keeping them out of the flooded home until all materials contaminated by the sewage waters have been removed or sanitized properly.

Electrocution

Another risk of entering a home that has been flooded is electrocution. Do not turn on the lights in the home, or the area if the entire house was not flooded. You do not want to be standing on wet floors and dealing with electricity at any point. If you can, stay out of the home until a sewage damage cleanup company can get everything dried out.

Once the flood waters have gone down it is important to dry out the home as soon as possible to avoid mold and other problems on the walls, floors, and especially carpets. This will allow you to use electricity to get deeper into sewage damage cleanup once you have effectively dried everything out.

Never take sewage waters lightly, as there can be very serious consequences leading to the complete loss of your home or even your life.
