The Best Desk for Your Home Office

By: Martin Brinkmann

A computer is an integral part of any modern household. With the predominance of internet access, the widespread use of digital photography, and the versatility of word processing and electronic record keeping, most families find that they simply cannot function without the presence of a home computer.

Owning a computer, however, also means choosing the appropriate computer desk to make the computer as effective as possible. There is a wide range of computer desks on the market, which means there are several key factors to consider when choosing a computer desk for a home office.

First of all, computer desks can be purchased at a variety of price points. Some desks can be bought at well under one hundred dollars while others can cost nearly a thousand or more. The difference in price is usually based on the quality of materials. Cheaper desks are often composed of particle board with fake wood laminate tops. They may also be constructed out of a cheap metal. This style of desk can work well in a more informal space, perhaps with an industrial look, but these desks certainly will not be winning any awards for style.

On the other end of the spectrum, some computer desks can be made of real hard wood in any stain imaginable. These desks are much studier and often more attractive in appearance. Such desks can be designed in any decorative style, from mission to antique.

It is also important to consider what type of computer the desk will be used for. Laptops have different needs than a desktop computer. Some computer desks come equipped especially for the needs of a desktop computer, having appropriate storage for the computer tower and a pull-out drawer for comfortable keyboard placement. Desks designed for laptops can often be smaller in scale and should be designed with a height that makes typing comfortable.

When choosing a computer desk for a home office, it is also valuable to consider the different functions the office will perform. If the computer is used in tandem with a printer and a fax machine or scanner, finding a desk with appropriate storage for these items will be beneficial. The more the home office is used for, the larger the workspace needs to be.

Lastly, whatever desk that is chosen needs to work well in the space. A large, ornate desk will not look attractive in a small, minimalistic space. Likewise, a small, laminate desk will stick out in a room filled with large and expensive furniture.

Whatever the budget or needs, there is sure to be a perfect desk to enhance any home office.
