Deaing With The Toxins In Your Home

By: Shawn Wilson

Your home and the things within it can be a chemical soup that may cause havoc to your health. Here are five toxins you should be aware of, and what you can do to eliminate them

Phthalates - Most commonly used to soften plastics and give a consistent smoothness to lotions and cosmetics, they can be found in everything from plastic water bottles, sand toys, food wrap, deodorant and perfumes. In 2003, The European Union banned their use in cosmetics sold in Europe, but the US and Canada have not followed suit. Use stainless steel containers, toys free of toxins, and look for organic, chemical additive free, cosmetics.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) - If you've ever experienced "sick building syndrome" you know what the effects of VOC's can be. Known to be toxic in high doses, Volatile Organic Compounds are a group of chemicals that will vaporize into the atmosphere. Sources in your home can include paint, cleaning products, air fresheners, and dry cleaning. Choose low emission products when painting, and ensuring adequate ventilation will help, as will not smoking indoors, and using alternative cleaning products such as simple water and vinegar solutions.

Chlorine - Remember how tight your chest became and breathing was difficult the last time you inhaled a whiff of chlorine bleach? There's a reason for the DANGER symbol on the bottle. Chlorine is a highly toxic gas. Use with extreme caution and better yet use alternatives such as vinegar and baking soda.

Heavy Metals - Heavy metal toxicity can lead to severe developmental delays in children and serious illness in adults. Pregnant women in particular are susceptible to heavy metal poisoning. Lead, though now banned in paint, can still be found in older homes, plumbing, and toys (beware made in China). Mercury finds its way into our bodies through the consumption of contaminated fish. Use water based paints, have your plumbing inspected, and educate yourself about where the fish you eat comes from. When shopping for toys, look for a Made in Canada or Made in USA label.

Radon - Radon occurs naturally in the soil around our homes and office buildings, and enters through cracks in the basement and foundation. Radon can also be dissolved in water and released into your home when you turn on your tap. It is thought to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. Have your home tested by to ensure that the radon level is below the acceptable limits.

This is just a small list of the toxins that can be found in your home. Others include carbon monoxide, bisphenols, pesticides; the list goes on.

Do everything you can to limit or eliminate the use of products that can release toxins into your home. You'll breathe easier, and likely live longer.
